Help your members banish the last of the winter blues by getting your social media and gym involved and engaged with all the events!
It might still be cold, wet and rainy but February has no lack of special days and events for a social media team to capitalise upon! Today here at Gym Owner’s Forum, we will be covering some events you know and some you don’t!
Making the most of your calendar this month:
Keeping your gym’s community engaged goes beyond just workouts and fitness tips and keeping track of the social calendar is a great place to start!
So as we approach February, here are the upcoming dates that can help make your events and social media that much more engaging and pertinent!
By focusing on a combination of key and fun events, your social media team can help drive engagement. And whether someone rolls their eyes or gets a genuine laugh out of ‘National Ice Cream For Breakfast day’, they will react!
Obscure holidays can bring personality to your brand and key events can act as a focal point for events and promotions. All of them should ultimately help foster a sense of community.
In a month that focuses too much on romance, focus on friendship instead! Originally popularised in Parks and Recs, this day is all about celebrating female friendships! It has seen a significant rise in popularity in the last few years, being celebrated by celebrities such as Michelle Obama.
Ideas for gym and fitness focused based Galentine’s Day activities:
And the day after Galentine’s Day is a little known holiday called, you guessed it, Valentine’s Day.
Valentine’s Day is one of the biggest of the month and should be a staple in any social media calendar for a gym or fitness club.
This is a chance to run a creative campaign based around workouts and gym passes for couples, Valentine’s Day playlists and collaborations with local partners.
On social media it is a great time to share Valentine themed fitness challenges or create a social media campaign around couples going to the gym together. Offering free or discounted Personal Training sessions to couples can create some interesting stories for the social media feed. (Take it from someone who has tried!)
An important celebration of diversity, National LGBT History Month in the UK is in February!
Celebrate diversity in your gym by seeking out and then sharing stories of inspiring LGBT athletes and members, hosting inclusive workout sessions, or spotlighting members and trainers who advocate for equality in your local area.
Encourage members to give their ideas on how they would want to celebrate the month. Hold fundraisers for prominent LGBT support charities and encourage conversation and support by partnering with local LGBT organizations.
LGBT+ History Month is an important and significant event to members and allies of the LGBT+ community and we would encourage Gym and Fitness Club owners and managers to consult the official organising site.
Raise awareness for this solemn and important day by hosting a charity fitness fundraising event where the proceeds go to one of the many great cancer prevention and support charities.
Another meaningful gesture can be to donate a percentage of membership fees for the day to a cancer charity.
Encouraging members on social media to share their stories if they feel comfortable to do so and to wear the colours of the Cancer they wish to raise awareness of and funds for.
World Cancer Day is a sensitive time so we would encourage all gyms and fitness clubs to consult their FAQ before participating.
Another occasion in the February calendar to be marked respectfully, Children’s Mental Health Week can help highlight the importance of fitness in children’s well-being.
If you run or manage a gym that caters to families, consider:
Once again we would invite any gym or fitness club owner or manager considering running an event to visit the website of the organisation running Children’s Mental Health Week before scheduling events.
And why not have some fun with it. It doesn’t take more than a couple of internet searches to find a whole host of funny and fascinating ‘official’ National Days for all things weird and wonderful.
We’ve detailed a few that are happening in February that might be good for some laughs and engagement on social media in February.
Honestly a great call by whoever put National Chip Week in a cold month. Have a little fun by running a poll on the best post-workout carb: sweet potato fries versus regular chips! Share a healthier or more protein-packed version of a beloved chip recipe in order to support fitness goals in a fun way.
This one is a bit harder to sell but with enough charm and tact any gym social media can make it work. Share high-protein, low-sugar ice cream recipes perfect for a morning treat, or host a “guilt-free” ice cream tasting at your gym. Everyone needs a treat day!
Held on the first Saturday of every February, that means this year National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day can be the starting point to a gym’s social media calendar on February 1st!
Continuing the Valentine/Galentine theme, National Make A Friend Day can help a gym encourage and foster community spirit by hosting a gym buddy challenge. Offer to pair up (willing!) members who don’t know each other throughout the day and complete a few small challenges together. Run a social media campaign asking members to share how they made a new friend through fitness.
By embracing both popular, serious and quirky events, you’ll not only keep your gym’s social media exciting but also create a stronger sense of community among your members. It is important to have a gym’s social media calendar be full of exciting and pertinent events throughout the month so it feels relevant and engaging to members and prospective members alike. So get creative, do the research, have fun and start planning your content calendar today!
